Movie Night
Christian Youth Group Favorite

Christian Movies:

I love movies. Movies can spark spiritual thought and conversations. Movie nights with your youth group are actually easy and fun. Parents will gladly drive their kids over because they know their kids will have a good time with great people. Kids will want to attend because they know nothing will be expected of them but to enjoy. You can add a desert and popcorn easily. My wife likes to make dinner too. It's a solid group building event.

Here are links to great movie suggestions and sources for more.

380196: Soul Surfer, DVD Soul Surfer, DVD

The astonishing true story of a courageous 13-year-old surfer who lost her arm to a shark attack---but never lost her faith! You'll be inspired by how Bethany Hamilton overcame physical and emotional trauma to return to competitive surfing with the help of her family---and God. Stars Anna Sophia Robb, Helen Hunt, Carrie Underwood, and Dennis Quaid. Rated PG. Approx. 106 minutes.

Bethany's youth pastor, church, and youth group are featured prominently in this movie. A host of Christian based resources have been created around this movie including devotions and a church outreach event kit.

Soul Surfer:

Bethany's mom also wrote a book that invites readers to journey with the Hamilton's to the lush islands of Hawaii, to experience a worldwide news event, Bethany’s shark attack, from her parents’ point of view. Witness the many small steps of faith and how God stepped in and gave them a higher purpose.

For extra seating we use bean bag chairs the the one shown. Kids love bean bag chairs. You can click on the bag to order from a company I recommend. They have a zillion to choose from. They are comfortable, easily cleaned, and easily stored.

Don't Just Sit There:

Movie Night is a great youth group building experience. Take advantage of snack breaks or dinner time to stimulate conversations and sharing. Use the ice-breaker book shown in the left column to keep the conversation going.

Pause the movie if there is a scene that has a spiritual parallel you might want to briefly discuss. Also, keep a notepad nearby if you see a scene you might mention as an illustration in a later lesson.

Christian Video Licensing and Location:

I recommend hosting a movie night in your home. If you show a movie at church or other public building you must first ensure that you have obtained permission, even if you are only showing a 30-second scene.  This is because pre-recorded videos and DVD's that you can buy or rent from shops are only intended for personal home use, not public viewing such as in your church building. Here's a link for more Church Video Licensing questions from ChristianCinema.com

Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed -BluRay DVD

Ben Stein may not look like a typical school rebel---but when he learned that educators and scientists were being ridiculed, denied tenure, and even fired for the "crime" of discussing evidence of "design" in nature, he'd had enough! Join him as he travels the world, questioning academia's doctrine of random evolution and championing intellectual freedom!

While Ben Stein is not a Christian he is great at exposing the absurdity of the theory of evolution without getting lost in creationism. A fair treatment of intelligent design.

216809: The Ideas Factory: 100 Adaptable Discussion Starters to Get Teens Talking The Ideas Factory: 100 Adaptable Discussion Starters to Get Teens Talking
By Martin Saunders / Monarch Books

One hundred adaptable discussion starters provide a brief story, usually factual, followed by a series of provocative questions. Each story explores a topic pertinent to young people, such as drugs, truancy, or parental relationships; or an important biblical concept, such as giving, the afterlife, or love.

The questions begin with general issues before moving on to what the Bible has to say. Extra questions are included for use with unchurched young people. The last twenty-five discussion starters provide a journey through the main stories and themes of the Bible. With its attitude of fearless exploration, and the tools for discussion provided throughout, The Ideas Factory is a priceless resource for youth leaders.

Movie Night is one of the best and easiest youth group building events to put together. Having it in a families home provides a safe enviornment that helps kids relax and bond.  Moms are happy to supply snacks or easy meals. Use movies to illustrate teenage appropriate Bible lessons and spark spiritual conversation. Did you ever think the Bruce Almighty could be used to talk about prayers? I've used Dances With Wolves to illustrate our Identity In Christ. Benefit from my experiences to make planning your Christian teen movie night great.
